QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
The best time of day to take photos is mid to late in the afternoon, when the sun is going down to where you can have some degree of control of the quality of your photos. In the noonday sun, sunlight is bearing down and casting harsh shadows. You can get great quality photos at noon, but we have to compensate by using a flash. WHAT? Yes! By lowering our exposure settings by a couple of stops to lessen the effect of the sun, we can then use what we call fill flash on our subject to lighten the subject, fill the harsh and nasty shadows with light, and thus overpower the effect of the sun. The other alternative is to find good shade.
That brings up another point. Even if you want to shoot photos when the sun is high in the sky, if the sky happens to be overcast, then that is great! The light from the Sun is up over the clouds, and the light is diffused in all directions, and there are no harsh shadows to deal with. However, I still use a little fill flash to make the portraits a little more punchy and eye-grabbing. Also, when flash is used, you get what we call catch light in the person's eyes, which means that the light from the flash reflects off the eyes and has a really good look in the eyes. If you shoot later in the afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky, you can use that to your advantage. I like to place my clients with their backs to the sun, using the sun for some backlight which reflects light off the back of the hair, giving it a nice warm glow, while using either a reflector or a flash to get the light right for the face in order to overcome....you guessed it......shadows. And if we are shooting late enough to get a good sunset in the background, that makes for some awesome photos! Indoor shoots are good any time of the day or evening, because in a studio setting, the lighting is very easy to control.
